Maison de Mère d’Youville
138, rue St-Pierre, Montreal
The
old walls of this house, built by the Charon Brothers in 1694 as the first
General Hospital in Montreal, speak to us still today of Saint Marguerite
d’Youville who from 1747 to 1771 was to both live here and receive
the most down-trodden of the area. We can walk upon the stone slabs in
the very room where she served soup, admire the large fire place and kitchen
sink of her era, pause to reflect in the room where this Mother of the
poor worked, prayed and died. Although not visible, her presence is greatly
sensed.
A permanent exhibit entitled
‘In Her Footsteps’ which opened at the end of April 2004 ever
reminds us of the charism lived to its fullest by one of our own. While
the articles on display for us to admire in these inhabited quarters bear
witness to the past, they are also a source of inspiration for the present
and future.
Visiting
this exhibit is at one and the same time an historical pilgrimage and
a spiritual experience.
